It’s a better part of a year now since a large portion of the workforce has been operating from the remote home office. While working in sweats and slippers is a far cry more comfortable than regular office attire, one of the downsides of being remote is the extension of office hours. Having a workstation setup in the house makes it easier to log on at 5 a.m. and close up shop at 7 p.m. translating into a far too sedentary day.
But standing while working – even for a portion of the work day – can have a major positive effect on the body. Enter the sit-stand desk converter to the rescue; these adjustable units are placed on top of an existing desk providing the option of standing without moving or removing the original desk. They often feature a desktop surface with a separate keyboard tray and come in a variety of sizes, designs, and budgets.
By now, many of us have become all too familiar with the so-called “quarantine fifteen,” a clever way of pointing a finger at the pounds piling up when the day is filled with two main exertions – working and eating! By standing for a portion of the work day, an estimated extra 50 calories per hour can be burned off. Standing just a couple hours per day can add up to a substantial reduction in calories (and pounds) over the course of a week, month, years etc.
Having the ability to stand while working has other proven health benefits, including the reduction of back, neck and shoulder pain associated with sitting in one position for hours on end. In the absence of nagging pain, an increase in productivity is a natural outcome…maybe enough to reduce that 10, 12 or 14 hour day to a healthier eight!
