All I Want for Christmas…is the Best Desk Chair!

Written by Pulse Technology | December 13, 2021

Just think about the number of hours we spend sitting at work – take the average 8-10 hour day, do the math and you’ll be astonished at the amount of “down” time over the course of a year.

From poor blood circulation to increased body fat, decreased concentration to even digestive problems, hours upon hours spent sitting -- especially on a bad chair – has its consequences. This year in particular has taken its toll on our spines. Spare dining room chairs have become default office furniture for many working from home, even though there are whole catalogs of reasonably priced office chairs available that offer ergonomic well-being.

So, whether you’re giving the gift of comfort to yourself or leaving present idea hints to others, take the following into consideration when choosing an office desk chair, starting with seat height that can be easily adjusted. A chair with a pneumatic adjustment lever will do the trick.

The seat should have enough width and depth to support the user comfortably, the standard being 17-20 inches wide. The proper depth should be enough so that the user can sit with their back against the backrest of the chair while still leaving about 2-4 inches between the back of their knees and the seat of the chair.

High on the priority list is lumbar support. The lumbar spine is naturally curved inwardly, so sitting for long periods without back arch support can lead to slouching, which in turn leads to strain and pain on the lower spine. A good ergonomic chair will have a lumbar adjustment for both height and depth to adjust to the proper fit for each user.

Then there’s the all-important backrest, which ideally should be 12-19 inches wide. The backrest, too, must be able to support the lumbar curve. And let’s not forget padding. The seat material of an office chair should have enough padding to be comfortable for prolonged periods of time.
